Tips for the Backgammon GameBackgammon is game that is a multi-level game, played by amateures and professional alike. As such, there are backgammon tips that apply to every skill level. Some of those tips are compiled in the following article.
Bearing off Checkers:
Usualy the best strategy is to bear off your checkers from the board. Your best strategy would be to remove your checkers with both dice, instead of considering things such as equal distribution, or the likes. Positioning Checkers in mid-high points: In order to avoid restricting future options you should not place your checkers on low points during the beggining of the game, especially positions one and two. Doubling Cube: You can redouble right after your opponent has. It is to your advantage to own the cube – thus preventing the opponent from being able to redouble. You should also double (if you can) if you are about to lose the match, if your opponent wins the game at the present cube value. You are taking no risking when doing so. A good rule of thumb would be to accept a double if your chance of winning is 25% and up. Bearing Off and Downward Sloping Formation: To avoid wasting pips, it is a good practice to downward sloping formation when removing checkers. Bearing in mind of course, that you cannot hit, or be hit, you should aim for an uneven distribution when positioning your checkers to bear off from the board. Aim to make a larger stack on point No.6 with a slope down to points No.3 or No.4. This avoids the necessity to use your higher numbers (eg. 5 or 6) to bear off from a #4, for example, later in the game. Abandoned Anchors: When you are laging behind you should not abandon your anchors or holding points. Be patient and wait for your shot. This might well be your only chance of winning. The Hit: If you'r not sure about your next move, hitting is a good one in most cases. This is the case when it relates to the opponent’s side and could be a determining factor in the entire game. Lock up one's Assets: Making a loose hit is sometimes less effective than creating a key point. Thus, it is important to lock up your permanent assets in the game. Backgames: There are two important points to remember when playing a backgame. For starters try to recirculate your checkers. When getting hit, you can avoid crunching the board. Secondly, increase your chances of hitting by creating shots (by opening up points). Also consider each and every one of your opponent’s rolls. Race Ahead: When you are ahead in the game, you should race. Break contact and trust your racing advantage. |
