Backgammon Game Gambling

Backgammon is a popular gambling game. Offline backgammon clubs and tournaments have money prizes. Since internet gambling burst onto the scene in the mid 1990's, online backgammon gambling has continued to grow in size and popularity and is one of the foremost gambling industries in the world today. Gamblers play for huge stakes and winning amounts can reach incredibly high sums.

When backgammon is played for money, an addition to the traditional game comes in the form of a doubling cube. This die has the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 on its interface. It is used to keep tabs on the game stakes. Depending on a player position and the amount of confidence he feels, he might chose to double the stakes. The opponent has the option of declining this offer (and thus loses the game) or he may accept.

It is not an easy choice to decide if to offer/ accept / decline a double. Players know that their decisions will affect the money that is at stake and need to think long and hard before making a choice. If a player offers to double a stake, it should not be on a 'whim' and it should be after careful consideration that he is truly ahead in the game. This is especially so because after the opponent has accepted, he 'owns' the cube and can, theoretically, redouble the stakes immediately after the first offer. Very often, a player can lose the game - and a lot of money - because of not having thought out the original doubling offer very carefully.

Doubling and redoubling is used as a playing strategy in backgammon. If done at the right, it can cause your adversary to resign. An opponent who feels that he is too behind in the game, and has too much to lose by accepting a double will usually make the right decision by forfeiting the offer and quitting the game. Sometimes NOT accepting a double is the wisest move one can make as he may have more to lose in the long run.

There are several way to go about the next moves, when players want to offer a double. Counting pips is one of them. By doing so the player will get an idea of his game status. Secondly, they can consider how many potential hits they have, how many prime-blocks each side has and the general position of the other checkers. Once all has been taken into considiration, a player can continue betting and hopefully win.
